Going on a paddle board tour or kayak eco-tour is an incredible way to explore Florida’s waterways, encounter wildlife, and enjoy the beauty of nature. Over the last 16 years, we have taken guests on our
Dolphin and Manatee Adventure Tours from all over the world, many of whom have never kayaked or paddle boarded before. To ensure you have the best experience possible, we’ve put together some helpful tips on what to wear for your Florida paddle board tour.
Dress for Comfort and Protection
The right clothing can make a big difference in keeping you comfortable during your tour. Here’s what we recommend:
1. Wear UV-Protective Clothing
Even on cloudy or cooler days, UV rays can be intense in Florida. Wearing UV-protective shirts, rash guards, or lightweight long sleeves will help protect your skin from the sun while also drying quickly if you get wet.
2. Polarized Sunglasses
A good pair of polarized sunglasses will not only protect your eyes from the sun’s glare but also enhance your ability to see dolphins, manatees, and sea turtles beneath the water’s surface. A sunglasses retainer strap is also a great idea to prevent them from falling into the water.
3. Hats for Sun Protection
Wearing a hat is an excellent way to keep the sun out of your eyes and shade your face. If you have a wide-brimmed hat, it can even help provide shade for your shoulders, keeping you cooler during your paddle.
4. Water Shoes for Foot Protection
Water shoes are highly recommended for your paddle board tour. They provide grip on your board or kayak and protect your feet from sharp objects like oysters, barnacles, and shells that may be in the water. Flip-flops are not ideal since they can easily slip off and don’t offer much protection.
Dress for the Weather
Florida’s weather can vary, so it’s important to check the forecast the day before your Florida paddle board tour. Here are some additional tips based on the season:
- Warm and Sunny Days: Lightweight, breathable clothing, UV-protective gear, and plenty of sunscreen.
- Cooler Days (Florida’s Winter): Consider wearing a light windbreaker or quick-drying layers to keep warm while still being comfortable on the water.
