SUP With Your Pup

Can pets also travel on my stand up paddle board? Absolutely. In fact SUP with your pup has become a favorite group outing. Before loading your Great Dane, Python or Goldfish up there are a few considerations.

Improve Your SUP Skills with Yoga

Improve your SUP skills with yoga, or, conversely improve your yoga skills with SUP. Whether you are an accomplished paddler, or a land lubber yogi, SUP yoga can help you improve your skills. The parallels between the two are numerous. While both are, or can be a form of exercise, both can be very relaxing and Zen-like. SUP can be very vigorous or it can be a slow, calming paddle through your favorite flat-water paradise. Unlike many sports, SUP and Yoga are less about brute strength and more about balance and core strength, as well as flexibility. Yoga can benefit […]

Increase Your SUP Speed

As a paddle coach, one of the most frequent questions I answer is, “how do I go faster or farther?” Typically working on stroke technique is the first step in improving both. For these purposes, we will assume you have worked with a SUP instructor to improve your technique, and that you have selected a fast hull, such as the Three Brothers Boards Irish Twin or Racer. In order to maximize the potential speed of the SUP, we must increase the speed of the paddler. As in many sports, practice makes perfect. But we don’t all have the hours we’d […]

The True Cost of a Purchase

Frequently I am asked to comment on the topic of purchasing a paddleboard. My convictions are pretty deeply rooted as a long time Three Brothers Board rider however I will offer my unbiased (well mostly unbiased) opinion when asked. One of the first questions I ask a person is what they intend to do with their board. Will they be fishing from it? Will they be surfing? Will they be touring with a group? Will they be racing? Will they use it for yoga. Usually a person just starting out may not necessarily know what they are going to do […]

At One With Nature From a Paddleboard

Being at one with nature from a paddleboard is an experience we owe to ourselves. Let’s face it, the pace of life has increased for many of us. We live in a connected world with smart phones linking us to corporate email and social media and for the most part we are fine with that. Until we need a break. When it is time to disconnect, truly disconnect, if even just for an afternoon. Jumping on a stand up paddleboard and heading out in to the water is an opportunity to disconnect. Your adventure can take you in a number […]

Time Stands Still On The Water

Our modern world is chock full of activities for our families to participate in. Soccer for kids, yoga for mom, golf for dad. We run around from one activity to the next so everyone gets time to enjoy their activity. Recreation is scheduled and executed with precise pick up and drop off times that would make an air traffic controller envious. With the surgical precision comes monotony and before you know it the very thing we were looking to escape has snuck in to our recreation. What makes stand up paddle boarding so different? Time stands still on the water. Occasionally […]

Enhance Stand Up Paddleboarding by Land Paddling

Would you like to enhance stand up paddle boarding by land paddling? Having been an avid land paddle rider for several years now I am frequently asked what it is and if it actually mimics stand up paddle boarding. For those that have not been exposed to it, land paddling or street SUP is a quickly growing sport that combines elements of stand up paddle boarding, surfing and skate boarding. Virtually every time we take to the streets or trails we get stopped and asked what it is we are doing, if it is a new sport and where can someone […]

Classics Never Get Old

Ernest Hemingway, a 1930’s Ford Woodie, a Brownie camera, a Swiss Army knife, a Volkswagen Bus, wingtip shoes, the Beach Boys, a John Deere tractor, a 1950’s juke box, and the Woody surf board. All are timeless classics deeply engraved in American culture of the past century. For those of us that have had the privilege of being handed down a family heirloom, we can understand the true timelessness of certain items. Whether it be your grandfather’s pocket knife or great grandmother’s china, the item is enduring in its simplicity. We find ourselves drawn to these items as they transport […]

Common SUP / Paddleboard Maintenance

Now that you have invested in a brand new standup paddleboard, it’s important for you to take the time needed to keep your board in pristine condition. Luckily, with just a few habits, you can keep your board looking brand new. Wash your SUP after EVERY use. Not after every other use, but every single time you use your board, wash it. All it takes is a quick rinsing with a hose. This will help keep bacteria and mildew from growing on your deck pad. This is very important if used in saltwater, but the heed the same advice for […]

What to Look For When Choosing a Paddleboard

Once you get to experience riding a paddleboard, you’ll want to go purchase one immediately. The problem is, how do you choose what kind to get? This depends on what you’re wanting to do and get out of the stand up paddle board, or SUP. The main reasons to purchase a SUP are fun/fitness or touring/racing. When purchasing a board for fun and fitness, board usage is more geared towards leisure. Most beginners will fall into this category and these boards are for all around use. Touring and racing boards are great for covering long distances and reaching high speeds. […]

Fishing from a SUP

In 2013 nearly 2 million new participants took to the sport of Stand Up Paddle boarding according to the Outdoor Industry Association. The options for these new paddlers include touring, SUP surfing, fitness/yoga, racing and fishing. After having checked off a couple of requisite boxes in the SUP bucket list, frequently the topic of fishing from a SUP arises. Usually in a “hey can you really fish from these?” kinda way, in the same way one would ask if rainbows really have a pot of gold. We know the answer but ask anyway hoping for a favorable response. Well in […]

Off Season Paddle Board Training

While much of the country is under a deep freeze at the moment, the golden days of summer are not that far off. While paddle board training, either for sport or enjoyment may seem a distant goal, now is the time to start planning your season. Firstly, don’t negate the value of an off season break. Allowing one’s body to recuperate is critical to be able to perform when the season kicks off. If you live in an area that is not currently frozen and own a wet or drysuit here are some tips for improving while it’s still cold. […]

What is Paddleboarding?

Paddleboarding is a sport that has really taken off into a main street sport in the last 10 years. Even three years ago, people would come into the shop daily and ask, “What is paddleboarding?” There are many different types of SUP’s or Stand Up Paddle Boards that are designed for many different uses. Today people all around the world are doing all types of things on Paddle boards. I have seen paddle boarders fishing, surfing, touring, spearfishing, lobstering, wake surfing, doing Yoga, racing and even taking on white water rapids. Paddleboarding has an appeal that is backed by the […]

Tour Participants Witness Rare Birth

A Three Brothers Boards paddleboard tour made the news when participants were able to witness a manatee give birth to two calves in the Halifax River around City Island in Daytona Beach on Friday, April 22, 2011. The rare event was captured on video by tour guide Austin Marvin, of Three Brothers Boards in Daytona Beach, FL. The paddleboarders heard the water moving and saw a manatee surface, a red patch of water, and then another baby calve appear. A few short moments later an additional baby manatee appeared at the surface and took a breath of air.
